Aim

This course provides training in the basic theory and use of radar& Automatic radar Plotting aids (ARPA) for officers in charge of a navigational watch on vessels equipped with ARPA. Other aspects covered includes the different types of ARPA in use and their various displays; the contents of IMO resolution A.823 (19). This model course aims to meet the minimum training standard in Table A-II/I of STCW 2010 as amended .The course also covers the recognition of critical targets, the measurement of bearings and distances and the use of these for fixing the ship’s position and maintaining the plot of the movement of the other ships as an aid to collision avoidance.

Scope & Objective

A candidate successfully completing this course and meeting the required standards of competence should be able to fully understand the capabilities and limitations of ARPA. The trainee will understand the danger of over reliance on the automatic acquisition and tracking of targets and on operational alarms.The trainee will recognize when RADAR should be in use. They will also be aware of the performance standard set out in IMO resolution A.823 (1) and factors which may effect the accuracy of derived information; and they will realize the need to check the accuracy of inputs and the correct function of ARPA.

Entry Standards

This course is principally intended for candidates for certification as Officers in charge of a navigational watch. Before being admitted to this course,the trainee should have completed a minimum period of six months at sea and preferably have gained some experience of bridge watch keeping. The Trainee must have completed course training in radar Navigation & Radar Plotting & meet the standard of competence specified in Part C1 of ModelCourse 1.07.

Medical Standard

As per M.S (Medical Examination for seafarers) Rules 2000 as amended from time to time.

Course Certificate

On successful completion of the course & demonstration of competence, a certificate will be issued certifying that the holder has met the standard of competence specified in Section A VI/2 and Table A-VI/2-2 of STCW 2010.

Intake

Not Above 20 per class

Required Attendance

100% attendance is required for successful completion of the Course. However, in exceptional circumstances the relaxation can be given for genuine reasons

A test will be conducted on completion of the Course

Certificate

After Successfully completion and Passing of Exam A certificate will be issued to the Student certifying that he has successfully completed the Course.
